Why is Endurance Riding Becoming So Popular

- in Recreation & Sports

What is known as “endurance riding” is a test of horse riding, which goes back to the 1950s in America, and which came over to Europe a decade later, even though there was already a not so well known type similar of riding a long time before it.

And just like many other styles of equestrian sporting events, endurance riding has its roots solidly in the training of military horses, which were in the past, often required to journey long distances over a lot of various and often precarious grounds.

All Ages

The riders and horses for endurance riding are of all age groups and get together to compete in rides which can vary from short leisurely rides developed for younger novice riders, to treks which can go on for up to five days.

  • The art of endurance riding can be extremely testing for both the horse and the rider as physical ability and good judgment are a must

On any endurance ride, horse and rider must start at a pre-set trail after being handed a map of the course displaying any obstacles which can be met. Every horse and rider are timed, so that riders must complete the course as fast as possible while each horse’s strength and ability is also being monitored.

Horse Inspection

  • Many endurance horse riding competition prizes are for the completion of the race itself, while various others will be based upon how long it takes to finish the circuit.
  • For more information on the endurance ride calendar, simply do a little online research

Because of the rigorous demands of the race, the physical condition of all of the horses is very important. Every horse is examined by a veterinarian at the start of the race for its stamina, and then it will be routinely stopped during the race to be looked at again.

The veterinarian will check the horse for its ability and fortitude and if in any doubt about a horse’s fitness, it will be removed from the race to prevent any kind of injury.

Every Breeds is Welcome

There is a mix of different horses at an endurance ride, although the heavier breeds are usually not regarded as a being fleet of foot. Most riders prefer the lighter, sturdier breeds for this type of competition.

  • In a lot of cases, the horse and rider already have a long working partnership which allows them to work amiably together along the trail.

Somewhat different to other equestrian events, the clothing worn is not strictly regulated and both the horse and rider can dress mostly for comfort.

  • Each rider has only to wear riding breeches, riding boots, a shirt and collar, plus a helmet, so as to promote a good image for this and all horsing events.

Along with the lightweight saddle and the rider’s choice of bridle, the horse can also be fitted with a breastplate so as to stop saddles from sliding.
